Peel the onions and Brown in butter in a heavy-bottomed pan.
Spolverizzarle with sugar, salt, pepper.
Sprinkle with vinegar and let it evaporate.
Pour flush with the hot broth and add the bay leaf.
Simmer gently, covered, until the liquid is fully absorbed and discard bay leaf.
Serve warm.
